Seasick Steve – Sonic Soul Surfer
Blues

The world’s favourite busker turned blues legend has returned with his latest album. Unfortunately it’s one of his weakest albums. It lacks memorable songs and is a tad too long. In a way it’s biggest downfall is that it doesn’t feel like Seasick Steve, it doesn’t have the same tongue-in-cheek vibe we’ve come to expect. His trademark humour and character is what made him and his music so lovable, without it the album falls flat. That’s not to say it doesn’t have it’s good moments; ‘Sonic Soul Boogie’ and ‘In Peaceful Dreams’ both do exactly what it says on the tin, providing a foot stomping groove and mesmerising meanderings respectively. This is an album for dedicated fans, those looking for a springboard into Steve’s music should look elsewhere. Sonic Soul Surfer is full of good blues, I honestly believe that Seasick Steve has the power to release an album that can capture the world’s attention, but this isn’t it.
