I’ve heard a lot of good things about Palma Violets and prior to listening to their latest album I was eager to see what the fuss was about. Either I listened to the wrong album by mistake or the band must have taken a real misstep. Musically there’s little to criticize. It’s nothing special but is full of solid riffs and youthful energy. Lyrically however the album is half-baked. The lyrics and their delivery are at best uninspired and at worst daft and irritating. The songs have hints of The Clash but there’s no message to them. They have the potential for angry, driven punk rock but don’t put the effort in; so much for ‘Danger‘. At times they seem to be going for the indie anthem approach but instead of being infectious and upbeat it just ends up sounding like a bunch of drunks at the local pub who won’t shut up. I’ve never seen such a bad case of wasted potential, they could hit the nail on the head with many genres if they wanted to but instead the band sit lackadaisically in limbo. They need to pull their finger out for their next album if they want to live up to the mysterious praise that they for some reason keep receiving.
