I’ve heard it said that there are two ways to write a story. Either you meticulously plan out every step, every twist, from start to finish, or you plant the seed of an idea and let it grow of its own accord. I think the same must surely be true of writing music; intentional composition versus bringing an idea to the table, jamming, and seeing where it leads. Both have their merits, but there’s an energy to the latter that feels very “lightning in a bottle”. That’s certainly the case with ‘Gone Already’, the new track from Hull alt rock trio Strange Pink. Taken from their forthcoming EP Guest Room, out 23rd October, there’s a deep rooted sense of possibility to the song. I hear a lot of Sonic Youth in the track. Not only its sound – hazy and frenetic, melodic and distorted – but in how it feels like a snapshot of a song that will never sound the same way twice. A living breathing thing left to grow as it wills. ‘Gone Already’ reflects on feeling abandoned by society, watching the world you know slowly crumble into ruin, and staring down the barrel of bleak future that can often feel inevitable. Yet ironically enough for a song all about knowing the end of your own story, this track weaves and blooms in a way that makes it feel like anything is possible.
