Lead single ‘Meteor’ was what first brought me to Broken Hands. It’s driving beat and raucous riffage is cut from the same cloth as Royal Blood and is one of the stand out tracks of the year. Sadly the rest of the album isn’t up to scratch. All the elements are there but they just don’t come together to produce other quality tracks. I feel like the songs are made for a live audience, but the studio versions are lacking in energy. Turbulence has it’s fair share of experimentation and ambient noise but most of it is detrimental to the album. ‘747’ contains nearly two minutes of what sounds like a lazy gremlin fiddling about in a call centre before the vocals eventually kick in. I feel like the band need to take some time out, go back to basics and figure out what direction they want their music to go. They have talent, they have potential, but if this debut is anything to go by they currently seem a bit lost. Hard hitting, straight-forward rock songs like ‘Four’ and ‘Meteor’ are solitary diamonds amongst an awful lot of rough. Back to the drawing board lads…
