Jasmine van den Bogaerde, as well as having one of the poshest names in music, has come a long way from her debut. She may have started out just doing covers, but she has since grown into a talented songwriter. Beautiful Lies is very much a coming of age album, full of songs about standing tall in the face of adversity and being yourself. Birdy has now stumbled into big hit territory with anthems such as ‘Keeping Your Head Up’ and ‘Wild Horses’, although neither quite have the emotion of her slow burner sensation ‘Wings’. Birdy is at her best when the music is stripped back and the focus is on her exemplary vocals such as on the title track and ‘Lost It All’.

Whilst she may have made definite progress with this album I feel there is still a long way to go. I feel like there’s still an uneasiness about her music as though she still hasn’t quite figured herself out. That lack of confidence is reflected in the album and makes it an uncomfortable listen. There are plenty of good songs, there is no faulting her voice or the songwriting, but they just don’t connect with the listener. The music is likable but certainly not lovable. Birdy is one hell of a talented singer and I long for the day that everything falls into place, but today is not that day.
